BB sets for 73mm and 83mm shells made by Thun

  • In this blog post I will be talking about the solutions for the 73 and 83mm BB housings made by Thun
  • In my last blog I was talking about the reasons that frames had to be made with wider bb housings and problems that the companies who are insisting still on 68mm width are facing.  But when you have a frame with a wider bottom bracket housing you would also need a compatible bottom bracket to go with it!
  • To support the bike assembly factories and service network Thun has developed the range of bottom brackets for frames 73mm and 83mm housings.
  • First to start there is entry level range of two models Basic and Paso which are compatible for both 68 and 73mm bb housings. These models have a  cleverly made left cup to make them adaptable and to save you the trouble when you have both 68 and 73mm frames in your production. They also save you money invested and warehouse space.
  • Secondly there is a premium range with a two shoulder system for 73mm BB housings to provide more strength and better grip to avoid thread loosening. These BB’s are also made with a clever left cup which is compatible with any pedal assisted sensor and any type of crank.
  • And the newest addition to the Thun’s premium range are the the BB’s for 83mm housings. Here they had to reconstruct the whole system and make much longer spindles, wider sleeves and change the bearing positions to make the BB up to the high standards they keep. These BB’s come in a variety of options and sizes so they can be implemented into any system.
  • What is important with these versions of BB’s is that they are all ISO certified same as 68mm versions so one can feel free to use them on his bicycles without any risk to the quality or making a bicycle that is not according to ISO standards.
  • So in conclusion if you are a product manager or have a service point you can feel confident to make bikes with 73 and 83mm BB shells because Thun has covered this by a variety of bottom bracket versions as well as with a good support.
