SHORTY by Thun

Recently I talked about new light bicycles especially made for children and young adults and companies that made this happen. Together with these companies Thun was onboard with this idea from the start and has developed a special series of bottom brackets just for children and young adult bicycles.

So what makes Thun’s bottom bracket for kids bikes so special?

– First the name of the BB range, Shorty, says a lot. Shorty is developed so that it can accommodate spindles that are as short as 107.5 mm! This short spindle allows even the smallest kids bikes to have a correct Q factor. The distance between child riders feet is narrowed significantly by the short spindle.

In case there is a need of a little wider version to accommodate different chainlines there are versions of 109,111 and 114mm as well.

So Q factor solved!

– Secondly Shorty is the lightest bottom bracket on the market weighing only 198 grams in it’s lightest version! This was achieved by the use of high tech composite cups and sleeves together with a spindle made out of German high quality steel. Next spindle is specially treated and zinc plated to prevent micro cracks from appearing after being exposed to extreme conditions. And on top of that this spindle is drilled through and hollow to make it lighter and stronger due to surface tension of material.

So lightweight point solved!

– Third there are two versions of Shorty. Shorty which is certified for the kids and young adult bikes and Shorty SL ML which is certified for MTB bikes.

Shorty SL ML is intended for the more sporty young adult bikes appearing on the market now which are in their core a true MTB bikes made for kids.

So safety for kids solved!

-In conclusion Shorty is a really flexible BB which can be accommodated in children bikes ranging from 12” to 26” sporty MTB’s made for kids.

Some companies even use Shorty SL ML for their Gravel bikes just because of the lightweight, short spindles, strength and reliability.
